The French Brand That Became the Symbol of Paris

The History of Dior Christian
Dior founded his legendary fashion house in Paris in 1946. Just a year later, in 1947, he unveiled his debut collection inspired by the delicate shapes of flower blossoms. Although originally named "Corolle," it went down in history under a completely different moniker: the "New Look." Dior’s collection was hailed as revolutionary, effortlessly replacing the plain, utilitarian wartime garments of the 1940s with pure, opulent luxury. Defined by rounded shoulders, a cinched waist, and flared midi skirts, it redefined modern femininity. Today, this same revolutionary spirit and eye for exquisite silhouettes can be found in every pair of Dior frames.

Yves Saint Laurent as Dior’s Creative Director
The sweeping success of Dior’s debut collection skyrocketed the brand to fame, cementing Christian Dior’s status as one of the greatest designers of the 20th century. In 1953, the maestro hired a young talent, Yves Saint Laurent, whose fresh perspective quickly began to influence the French fashion house's collections. This creative synergy led to a rapid promotion; following Christian Dior’s sudden passing in 1957, Saint Laurent was named the brand's Creative Director. However, his tenure was short-lived. In 1960, Saint Laurent was drafted into the military and forced to leave Paris. He was succeeded by Marc Bohan, who masterfully guided the vision of the French fashion house for nearly three decades.
The Eras of Dior: A Legacy of Visionary Designers
In 1989, Gianfranco Ferré succeeded Bohan, bringing his architectural precision to the brand. Later, the legendary John Galliano took the helm, ushering Dior into a spectacular new era. Famous for his theatrical flair, Galliano boldly experimented with avant-garde cuts and silhouettes, drawing inspiration from diverse historical eras. Following Galliano's departure in 2011, Dior entered a period of sleek transformation. Raf Simons took over as Creative Director, introducing a more minimalist, contemporary approach to Dior’s high-fashion DNA. In 2016, a historic milestone was reached when Maria Grazia Chiuri was appointed as the first-ever female Creative Director in the brand's history. Chiuri infused Dior with modern feminism and contemporary relevance, while placing a strong emphasis on sustainability and social responsibility.
